Trash and Garbage Removal [19 Jul 2008|05:24pm]

neworleans

[theredpanther]
My last tenants left a bunch of crap under the house, behind the house, in the house... under the porch... you name it, and they shoved crap there.

So I'm looking for one of those little companies that come by and clean out your crap for you, and get rid of it. I saw handmade signs posted everywhere post-K, but now I never see them, so I don't know who to call.

Anyone know of anyone? Used anyone? Has a neighbor that does stuff like this? I don't want some big fancy company that charges me an arm and a leg to haul stuff away. I'm just looking for an old guy with a pick-up truck kind of operation who will show up and get the work done with little fuss.

I've been neglectful [19 Jul 2008|02:16pm]

It's amazing how little desire I have to be near a computer once I get home from working on one all day. I don't even usually check my e-mail. Let alone write.

But, this summer has been great. Research is coming along and I'm having fun with it. The whole experience was much different than I expected but I have enjoyed it. When I started, I didn't anticipate the degree of "ramp up" required to get going with the research. So, I've pretty much spent 7 weeks of my summer getting ready for 3 weeks. Now that I'm in those final 3 weeks the research is a non-stop affair (from 8-5 M-F) so I can actually generate results. I like the pace of the work though and I am now starting to get pretty interested in it as I learn how it all works.

Outside of work, the summer has been pretty amazing. The people on campus for the summer are a bunch of fun and it has been great fun expanding friendships with them.
Visiting North Carolina for the 4th was a great experience, too. I firmly believe it was just what I needed. Campus was getting a little small and constricting and the opportunity to see people from Savannah was great. The car ride also served as great reflective time about where I've been for the the past year and where I hope to be in the next.

With all of that said, I can't wait to be home. I've got my train ticket purchased and I'm ready to roll. The plan is to leave the car (full of stuff) in Richmond for the two weeks I'm home and then ride back up with dad and the refrigerator. I'm not really excited to start my last semester of college yet but I'm definitely ready to move beyond the University of Richmond. The last year has been increasingly fun but it is time for me to move into a new community.

Not really sure if I can post this here, so feel free to delete it.

free dog )

Ok, that's it.  She's free - has a food and water bowl and a leash.  If you have any suggestions for finding her a good home, I'd be happy to hear it, but please be nice!  It's been a rough few weeks already, on top of having to give her up AND leave New Orleans.  Thanks!

It's been Two Weeks--Time for an Update [17 Jul 2008|04:27pm]

squeakywheel
Tonight is Date Number Four with David, my French Un-Boyfriend. My FUB. We’re going to a wine tasting and having dinner. I’m actually not too concerned that I'll come across as a complete idiot at the wine tasting; I’ve already admitted that I don’t know anything about wine, so I’ll let him do all the talking. But he makes me very nervous so I intend to actually drink my wine while he spits his out.

Anyway, my birthday was nice. I had lunch with my friend Amy and dinner and ice cream with Kosta. Yes, I know what I said about Kosta before, but he’s turning out to be a good friend. There’s still some awkwardness between us but it’s otherwise good. I also got calls from Dirk, Caroline, and my family. And then some emails, like from Leon, whose message was especially nice.

I was planning to go to London this past weekend but I ended up rescheduling my flights. But I do have a lot of travel lined up. I’ve got my week in Spain with my parents, and that’s coming up in about 10 days. Then in August, I’m spending five days in Germany with Dirk, and then the following weekend I’m heading to the UK (not London, though) to visit a friend who I met in June when he vacationed here in Prague. And then I’m planning to do London in September.

Can you tell I’ve got my visa now? I’m all clear to travel, and so I shall.

Sula Foundation

On Thursday July 24th, The Sula Foundation will sponsor a talk with Ledy Van Kavage, Senior Director of Legislation and Legal Training with the ASPCA. The topic: American Pit Bull Myths, the dangers of breed profiling, and how we can all work together toward responsible laws that address dangerous dogs and owner responsibility. Ledy is a dynamic, entertaining speaker, so this will be a fun evening, in spite of the serious topic. And to make it a little more fun, we'll be holding the event at the dog-friendly Bridge Lounge! Admission is free for well-behaved people and leashed dogs.

tv guts [16 Jul 2008|11:02pm]

neworleans

[insilico]
I gutted and old non-working TV and turned it into a bar, but what do I do with the insides?  I know I'm not supposed to throw them away with the regular trash.  Or, does anyone want the insides of this TV?  It's probably from the 70s or earlier, but really I've got no clue.  Thanks!

neworleans

[oh_really_now]
New Orleans is a city that's known world wide for it's cuisine, so what could be easier than Dining Out For Life to help raise money for the programs and services of NO/AIDS Task Force.

This year, on Thursday July 17th, dozens of the areas best restaurants will donate 25% of their proceeds to NO/AIDS Task Force. All you have to do is dine at one of these restaurants and 25% of your bill will help someone living with HIV/AIDS.

On Thursday July 17th, make sure to ask your waiter for a donation envelope. By making an additional donation to NO/AIDS Task Force on the night of Dining For Life, not only will you be entered in a drawing to win a stay at The International House Hotel or The W New Orleans - French Quarter, but your waiter will be entered into a drawing to receive a stay as well.

List of participating restaurants can be found at http://www.noaidstaskforce.org/

Chapter 13 of After The Deluge goes live [15 Jul 2008|12:46pm]

neworleans

[antigravity_no]
Hey everyone,

The new chapter of A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge has gone live—it's entitled "If It's The Last Thing We Ever Do" and takes place on September 1st, 2005 outside the Convention Center.

I'm curious to see what people think about this, and A.D. in general, especially after all the play the "parasite class" comments have gotten lately.

Canoeing/Tubing [15 Jul 2008|11:59am]

neworleans

[insilico]
Some friends and I are interested in going tubing or canoeing on a nearby river.  I found Sweetwater online which seems to have good prices and such.  Does anyone have good river or company to rent tubes/canoes from?  Good/bad experiences at any particular place?  I used to go tubing down Blackwater in Florida when I was in high school, but now it's kind of gross (plus it's like four hours from here).  Thanks!

*And I didn't see any related tags, so I'll just leave it empty for the mods to tag up.

Take Charge! [15 Jul 2008|12:16am]

neworleans

[oh_really_now]
I was checking out Planned Parenthood's website and came across a program I had never heard about. It's called Take Charge and is a medical program for women concerned about affordable family planning/women's health care. You can find the FAQ here, what's covered and the application. You can even apply online. The same application will be used to determine whether you qualify for other assistance such as Medicaid.

I would be happy to utilize the tags function so others may find this in the future, but not even "planned parenthood" or "birth control" have been previously listed.
