ive escaped hurricane katrina & im alive.
on saturday morning i awoke to my roommate & sorority sister, allie, saying "get up! school's cancelled!" naturally i was like "hell yah!" cuz i didnt realized katrina was headed for new orleans. just a day earlier on friday they were projecting it would hit alabama and geogia, and completely miss new orleans just like hurricane ivan did last year.
we turned on the news and started flipping out. the eye of the hurricane was supposed to directly hit us. last year, though, they said the same thing and we ended up evacuating for a week and nothing happened. so, allie and i thought that we would be out of school for just a couple of days. our parents said to pack up our stuff and leave.
thankfully, i drove my car out to new orleans, so we waited in the extremely long line for gas and headed west. it took us THREE HOURS to go only 20 miles. traffic was a bitch, but we finally made it back baton rouge and into mississippi. we got to arkansas on sunday afternoon and were planning on staying with my great aunt for a couple days until the storm passed (we thought i'd only be a day or two).
as monday morning approached, we had to accept reality. our beautiful city and school would not be the same. new reports showed pictures of houses, streets, and businesses that we recognized. it was so surreal. "ive been there!" we'd shout. weird.
seeing as we thought we'd be back at school in a couple days, we (along with EVERYONE) else only packed about three or four days of clothes. sitting in our lovely SECOND STORY dorm is all of our clothes, laptops, pictures, tv's, refrigerators....EVERYTHING!
although it reallyyyy sucks that we dont have enough clothes to last a week, we know that we are definitly lucky to be alive. people were trapped on their roofs, bodies were floating around our city, and some guy in the superdome committed suicide. geez.
this morning we realized that it would be months, if not the whole semester, before we could get back to school, so we left arkansas and drove up to kansas, where allie lives.
im staying with her family until morning, and then we're driving home to los angeles on monday morning.
unfortunatley, it looks as if school is not going to resume until next semester. allie's gonna live with me until then and we're both gonna get jobs out in cali and maybe take a night class or two.
as great as it will be to see all of my friends and family in california, i wish i was back in the city i love...new orleans. although, ive only been there a year, it seems like i grew up there. that city is now my home, and i hope and pray that it's okay.
the situation is only getting worse, and i hope to God that something changes. please pray for new orleans and everyone who is now homeless.
